The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, also known as Wyoming State highway 296, is a 47 mile route that starts 16 miles north of Cody, Wyoming and ends at the Beartooth highway (U.S. highway 212). The drive offers views of deep river gorges, rugged mountain peaks and wide valleys. This is the route of the legendary flight of Chief Joseph and his band of Nez Perce Indians in 1877 as they fled the US Army.
